A Review of Nutberg – Food in a Different Form

Nutberg is a natural, non-fussy, easy-to-carry, drinkable protein meal. We tested it over four months after heavy exercises, mountain bike races, treks and as a regular meal, so you don't have to.

I stumbled upon Nutberg when I was looking for new protein mixes. Being an amateur athlete who trains and travels a lot, I instantly knew I needed to give this one a try. I placed my order and recieved the package from Czech Republic to India in only three days—not a bad first impression. So, off I went. Armed with 12 packets of Nutberg for the next four months, I travelled to remote places for work, trekked, kept up an exhaustive daily training routine, finished a multi-stage mountain biking race and a trail running race – making sure to keep a pack of Nutberg saved for quick recovery after each race. Wanting to test Nutberg in as many situations as possible I didn't take everyday, but saved it for when I thought it would be I could get the most out of it.

The Taste:
Unlike most other protein drinks (Vega, Soylent, etc.), the very first sip came with a distinct taste of the nuts used in it. This turned me off immediately. Fortunately, other than the nuts, its overall taste has been kept neutral letting me experiment with it as much as I could. I don’t like to use sugar in my post exercise meal and would much rather go with a bland, but healthy meal that gets me recovered as fast as possible for the next day’s workout.

Although an additional packet of cane sugar can be added, I loved the Nutberg packet as is. Returning from a single day race in September, with blender access at the hotel, I mixed half a banana and some dark chocolate syrup with the mix after some cool down and stretching. Hoping it wasn't just a placebo effect, I felt great the next morning. Nutberg seemed to have done its job. I also took Nutberg sachets for my longer weekend workouts and experimented with it in different ways, sometimes mixing it with milk. Although I tried to keep these experiments limited as Nutberg already had a lot in it, it all depends upon individual taste. 29g of protein in a sachet is a lot of protein. I sometimes split it up into two with an hour gap in between.
Note: always pour it on water and not the other way around. It has a thick consistency.

I also carried Nutberg packets with me while on a National Geographic project with The Outdoor Journal to some remote locations in the North Indian Himalayas. Doing long treks, we were always on-the-go. Nutberg did a good job in satiating us and it was light and easy to use. It can be mixed in any bottle and was ready within a minute.

The shaker that came with it wasn’t really up to mark, breaking in my rucksack when I was traveling. Also, the rubber inside the cap of the bottle fell out constantly and I had a hard time fixing it. However, this is a problem the company has already worked on and the newest bottle seems to be much sturdier.

I am always open to try new things. The real-food ingredients used in Nutberg can make any conscious eater go for it. Nutberg is a perfect, ready-made blend of all the important micro-nutrients people need in a day, whether exercising or not. It is a meal in itself with no GMOs or preservatives.

With a few more packets I would have loved the chance to experiment more with the taste – even making bars using Nutberg’s mix, jaggery and chocolate as a base which I could store during long runs and cycling. Having a healthy product, without compromising on the taste is more than possible.
